So I made a little pit stop in LA before heading to Asia. I find myself in this city far too much throughout the year, and my love for the food here is basically why. Here’s 5 of my favorite foods that I ate in the span of 48 hours… And 5 foods I think you should try.
1. Japanese Barbeque – Gyu Kaku
During this entire meal, I was roasting myself for having Japanese BBQ the night before heading to Japan. But to justify this decision, we don’t have Japanese BBQ in Atlanta and I personally love Gyu Kaku more than Korean BBQ.
We ordered the Premium Kobe Course for 2 between 3 people and it was the perfect amount of food. I would recommend the course meals because you get to try a little bit of everythin’. Plus, the S’mores they give you at the end where you roast your own marshmallows is pretty brilliant.
2. Vegan Fix – Cafe Gratitude
I’m not a vegan. Clearly. But I do love a good vegan meal once in a while because truth be told, I’m not the biggest fan of consuming too much meat. Way back before the whole veganism trend blew up on social media, when I thought of vegan food, bunny food was the only thing that came to mind – a.k.a. leaves and carrots.
Cafe Gratitude changed the game for me. Bruh, you gotta try the SF Mission Burrito and the Magical Veggie Burger.
F*cking bomb. My friend and I both agreed that it didn’t even taste like a vegan meal. It truly tasted like an actual burrito and burger. Another thing besides the food that I really enjoyed about this spot was the server does this whole ‘food for thought’ session with you. After you order, they ask you a question that gets you thinking/conversing with whomever you’re dining with while your food is getting prepared. The question of the day was “What do you like about your friends and why?”
Great conversation starter/ice breaker for awkward first tinder dates. Ha. (Not that I’ve ever been on one or anything.)
3. Buddha Bowl – Wanderlust Cafe
I always joke around that the first thing I’m going to do after landing in LAX is grab an overpriced green juice and/or kombucha. Lol. I didn’t exactly do that but I did get a Buddha Bowl at Wanderlust Cafe. H2O, lean, same thang.
This was probably the most annoying LA-ish thing I could’ve done. But regardless, it was good.
I try to eat clean at least 85% of the time, with a few exceptions when I’m traveling. So the Buddha Bowl was a good healthy meal that I’m used to making myself at home. The aesthetics of this place was also a plus. Make sure you sit outside. It’s pretty out there on the patio and we all know the weather in LA is always A1.
4. Tostados – Street Food Truck
If you don’t already know… LA has the best Mexican food. You can’t go wrong here. Any janky looking taco truck will have the most bomb tacos, tostados, etc etc. Go go.
5. Ice cream – Salt and Straw!!!!!!!
I shamelessly had this twice in less than 48 hours. I have a serious sweet tooth and I’ve tried so many different ice creams (I’m damn near an ice cream connoisseur who is also lactose intolerant but idc because it’s always worth it) and this was by far the BEST I EVA HAD.
A scoop of the Roasted Strawberry and the Toasted White Chocolate and the Stumptown Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts… Just wowowow. So f*cking creamy and the nuts in the Stumptown coffee flavor adds a nice crunch. Both flavors are out of this world. I couldn’t shut up about it for a good couple of hours. It’s so good, it’s almost concerning how good it is.
I’m not the best at explaining food. I just like to eat it and take photos of everything so this is all you get. Currently working on some more content from LA and Tokyo. Cumin’ soon.
